Reflexology is the study of the reflexes present in the hands and feet which correspond with the organs and glands of the body – it dates back over 5,000 years.

It is believed that by applying pressure to these reflexes, the central nervous system can be stimulated and encouraged it to produce a number of physiological changes within the body, which can ultimately promote relaxation and help to bring about a state of equilibrium.

Reflexology was sanctioned by the NHS for people with MS in October 2003 and has been successful in helping to alleviate symptoms, in particular, chronic pain, headaches and a feeling of general well-being. There is continuing research being carried out in the hope that experts can learn more about the how reflexology can help those who suffer with MS, so watch this space.

Possible benefits of reflexology:

  • Improved circulation
  • Relief from parasthesia (altered sensations e.g. pins and needles in the feet)
  • Release from the heavy feeling in the legs
  • Posture and balance improvement as the body relaxes
  • Reduction in pain and spasms
  • Constipation
  • Improvement in skin condition
  • Increased energy levels
