http://www.digg.org.uk/selfassessment/
This Self Assessment site is a new resource to help people with a disability to find what the need to help them live their life to their full potential. Through its many links it will guide you to the wide variety of services, facilities and opportunities from which you can choose.
The Self Assessment site was created after seeing a need for people to be able to determine themselves, what they can and cannot do and give them the opportunity to explore under no pressure, to find the types of support and the methods of achieving any aims they have, socially, in employment and in recreation.
Very often, assessments by social workers can be a daunting prospect on what they can and cannot do. Some days people can be considerably worse than other days and it’s difficult to get an accurate picture of the person limitations and how these affect the things they want to be able to achieve.
The Self Assessment website tries to offer links to organisations in various sectors of a person’s life. So by going through each of these parts on a pathway of sorts, a person can work through and see what is available to them and hopefully see what similar people have been able to achieve.
The site therefore endeavours to get the person into the process of thinking about their needs.
So that when they go to speak to their GP, social worker they really know what things they require and feel more confident and in a better position to really get access to things that will enable them to live life to their full potential.
The website sections are broken down into specific pages and contained within these individual sections, organisations relevant to the area are signposted. Each link has a small info button beside it so you can view a short description of that organisation and their contact details without actually leaving the Self Assessment site. If the site takes your interest, you can click on that link and the chosen site will open up in a separate window.
The various sections focus on different issues, such as physical issues like Care and Support, legal assistance, managing symptoms, carer support etc…
The other sections focus on more recreational and social issues, like signposting to social activities, campaign groups, leisure links and personal development as examples.
The organisations, the Self Assessment site signposts to, are wide ranging in type and scope. Some are government related links to the relevant parts of the Direct gov site, but many of the links are charities and organisations that are there to either provide support for specific issues/ conditions or to offer advice and provide information on things like benefits and employment.
Many of the various sections are further split into smaller sections providing a wide variety of national and local bodies dealing with many different issues relating to that part of the site.
The Self Assessment site is geared towards Glasgow but many of the organisations signposted are UK wide or Scottish based and some are to be found towards Edinburgh.
The key thing about the site is its relevance to everyone who wants to explore their options and get the support they need to live their life the way they want to.
