His interest focuses on understanding how immune and nervous system interactions drive the development of neurological diseases, in particular multiple sclerosis. His research group demonstrated that antibody-dependent effector mechanisms play a critical role in the pathogenesis of immune mediated demyelination and identified several autoantigens now believed to play a major role in the pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis. He was awarded the Sobek Research Prize for these studies in 2003. He is a member of the MS Society Grant Review Panel, the scientific board of the European School of Neuroimmunology (ESNI) and the advisory board of the FP6 integrated project Neuropromise (Neuroprotective Strategies for Multiple Sclerosis). His work in Glasgow continues with a keen interest in MS.
